Program Expansion and Getting Involved 7. Important Subscription Information We welcome questions and comments at engindia at mit.edu. ****************************************************************************** 1. New Project Descriptions Following Mariel and Pooja's May 2007 visit to Pabal, a number of new project descriptions were identified and added to the website. These reflect the growing level of technology becoming available in Pabal. You can now find these descriptions on the "Projects" page of the website ( http://www.engindia.net/projects.htm). New project descriptions include: Cell Phone Business Applications, Internet Business Applications, Internet Training and Education, and Project Implementation. 2. New Wiki Location We have changed the hosting site of the engINdia wiki. The wiki is now located at: http://engindia.wikidot.com. A wiki is a website that can be edited by any person interested in joining the site. We hope to make this a repository for information about Pabal collected by student researchers and students that visit Pabal. This will help to ensure that information that is collected is available to all students now and in the future, and provide students with a more detailed understanding of various aspects of life in Pabal. We hope that the Wiki will be a resource that can help everyone involved with engINdia's Design Challenges innovate more appropriate and sustainable solutions. 3. Current Researchers There are four students who are currently working on projects, one who has recently completed a project, and three who are planning to start a project in the fall. These students are located in a variety of cities in four different countries. Below are the names of the researchers and the project they have completed or are currently investigating. Soon we will be posting updated information on the current researchers and their projects on our website on the "Current Researchers" page ( http://www.engindia.net/currentresearchers.htm). Recently Completed: Jo Read - Biogas Generator Current Researchers: Hayley Weston - Biodiesel Liam O'Neill - Cooler Housing in Hot Climates Emmanuel Morin - Water Treatment Michael Barnett - Structural Analysis of Geodesic Domes 4. Students Visiting Pabal Hayley Weston, who is listed above as a current researcher, will be traveling to Pabal at the end of May (in about a week) to work with Vigyan Ashram to implement the biodiesel solution that she designed. She will be in Pabal for about three weeks and hopes to get a working prototype completed in that time. She will also be communicating with other student researchers to help them get information for their own projects. There are currently two professional engineers, Michelle and Scott, that are living in Pabal and working with Vigyan Ashram. Michelle and Scott have offered to help engINdia researchers collect data or find information to help support more appropriate and sustainable solutions. We are grateful for their help. If you are a researcher interested in getting in touch with Michelle or Scott, please email engindia at mit.edu. 5. Presentation at EWB-UK Research Conference EngINdia was honored to be asked to present at the Engineers Without Borders UK Research Conference in London on May 18, 2008. A copy of the presentation is available on the engINdia homepage under "latest news" ( http://www.engindia.net). The conference was very useful and interesting, and provided a great opportunity to talk to students about engINdia. EngINdia also ran a workshop on Saturday, May 19, 2008 at Imperial College, organized by the EWB-UK group. The workshop was very useful, and allowed students to discuss and provide feedback on important issues such as project descriptions, appropriate solutions, communication, and project implementation. EngINdia appreciated the enthusiasm and active involvement of all of the students that attended. 6. Program Expansion and Getting Involved We are always interested in getting more people involved in engINdia. Whether you want to work on a project, provide guidance for students, help with the website, or anything else, we're happy to work with you. Check out our "How to Join In" page (http://www.engindia.net/howtojoin.htm) and our "Support Our Effort" page (http://www.engindia.net/supportoureffort.htm) for more information about how you can get involved. 7.
